The Work in Practice

Interledger grantees work across the world in different financial environments, from regions with limited infrastructure to highly connected digital economies. They include community-based organizations, researchers, technologists, and advocates who build infrastructure, advance research, shape policy, and expand how financial systems work in practice.

  1. The Metagovernance Project: Community governance and participatory budgeting for the Web

    Prototyping a modular, customizable governance standard and framework for online communities that will allow users to design their own rule-sets, choose voting schemes, and make collective decisions about resource allocation and monetary flows through the Web Monetization standard. Rather than providing a fixed governance algorithm, the Metagovernance standard allows developers and users to build, assemble, and share their own governance processes, appropriate to their needs. Through it, for instance, a community that earns money through Web Monetization would have a transparent, accountable means for deciding together how that money should be saved or spent.

  2. Providing free legal assistance to web monetization innovators

    Conducting one-on-one consultations to provide pro-bono legal assistance to independent online creators who use Web Monetization technology, including to Grant for the Web grantees. Also, publishing educational resources based on those consultations to provide guidance to the vast majority of creators in need who we don’t have the capacity to directly assist.
